Akira has one of the best replay values of serious animes I've seen. After watching it a few times in a month, it still contains parts you don't remember seeing the time before, or you can actually understand parts that made no sence before.
The animation is clear and smooth, the motorcycle scenes really stand out. I especially like the light trails on the tail lights. I was very impressed with the complexity of some of the scenes, there's a few fight scenes that just blow you away.
The only generic attribute to the story was that it was set in Neo-Tokyo, which as we all know is the setting to the majority of animes (or just plain ol' Tokyo). The setting isn't bad at all though, the city's a complete wreck and out of control, a very fun environment in my opinion.
The character development was very unique, unlike most where it's about an individual maturing (or un-maturing in some cases), Akira's about the transformation of a regualar man into a mighty force. His transformation process is more like a freaked-out insane asylum home movie, but the whole concept was no less than genius.
