For the last few months we've had the Burnout 3 demo at GameCrazy, so I played it durring my breaks with only one track and one car.. Even with those restrictions - it never really got boring.
Simply put, this game is beautiful. Being published by EA was a big turn-off, but once I saw what Burnout 3 had to offer, I was instantly hooked.
Think of it as an arcade racer, like Cruisin' USA - the physics are obviously skewed and then handling is roughly the same, then add some very crisp graphics, incredibly detailed wrecks, slow motion, and nitro into the batch. Set the oven for 340 degrees and you're really cookin'.. ha.. did you catch the pun there? Burnout.. ha.. anyway.
The modes include everything you'd expect in a racer, and then some. Of course there's the generic races with 5 other competitors and some one-on-one action. Then there's a very funky mode where you actually TRY to cause as much damage as possible in an intersection by crashing your car in a strategic spot. They throw another element into the game to make it interesting - you gain nitro by doing risky things, like driving in on-coming traffic for a length of time, or avoiding a wreck. You can also gain a higher capacity for nitro and fill your bar by making another car wreck. Yet another cool element.. is that once you've wrecked all hope is not gone - you can put the game in slow motion and steer your wreck into other players, taking them down with you.
All-in-all Burnout 3 is a very worthy addition to the racing genre and has raised the standards for future racers. It's a pure-action ride that'll have you hooked for weeks, and a much safer way to cause a 44-car collision.
