I had so much fun with this series, it was an entertaining and touching story all the way through. In my opinion it had some of the best elements an anime can have, comedy, action, romance. Although the art is somewhat grainy at times, this OVA is a definate MUST for any Otaku's collection. If you liked Fushigi Yuugi you'll most likely enjoy this very much. I've watched the whole thing twice, and still wouldn't mind watching it again.
The characters are really fun in this series, Fujisawa Masamichi reminds me of Ronfar (I believe that's his name), from Lunar 2 - Eternal Blue. A drunk priest (or teacher in Masamichi's case) that still posses great power. Being about 4 hours long, it's lengthily enough that the story's not over right when you pop it in, and short enough that you don't forget what's been happening the whole time. If I remember right it is slightly pricey though, around $130 at your local video game / anime store most likely. I'd guess it'd be about 80 or $70 dollars used. I also really like the opening and ending themes, they're pretty catchy.
In conclusion, anyone who loves a great fantasy story will be craving El-Hazard, you certainly wont miss your $120 for such a remarkable story.
