I can rank this as one of the most astonishing animes of our time, I read about it a couple months before it came out, and even then I was drooling all over my New-Type magazine. The first thing that caught my attention was the artwork for this series, it's VERY nice, in somewhat of a Chobits style. You know how everything's really nicely defined and shaded. The art on the cover of the the boxed set is really cool. RahXephon isn't your typical Mech anime either, unlike Gundam Wing, they don't go around blowing eachother up with huge-ass guns and swords. In this series most attacks from the Dolems are super-sonic waves, or other original attacks. They definately put a lot of work into making this different from anything else anyone's ever done before.
Even though the story's set in Tokyo, like most animes.. but it's not the typical Tokyo, or even Neo-Tokyo for that matter. Rather, it's set in Tokyo Jupiter, a sphere made to keep the civilians inside from knowing the truth about the world, and the war. I thought that concept was cool in itself, time flows at a different pace there, and to the civilians it's even a different year in there, than it is in the rest of the world.
The music's great too, very soothing and definately composed well. I don't say this often, but even the english songs are good, since that's what you hear on the DVD anyway, if I remember right.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone who liked Neon Genisis Evangelion, or any one who's looking for something out of the "regular"!
