Before starting this movie, I suggest buying a cheap roll of paper towels. By the time the film is over, you'll find half the roll gone from soaking up the drool pouring out of your open mouth.
Why do I make this assumption? Let's start from the top.
I almost puked in astonishment (a great compliment) when I saw the amount of detail put into this movie. Even the large environments with lots of movement are greatly detailed. I especially liked the oil-canvas paintings that appeared durring certain parts of the movie. I always loved the train scenes, just the concept of a single-car train going over a track covered in water is a beautiful concept. It definately wasn't a low-end animation process, I guess it was probably slightly easier with the help of Disney's funding for the american release.
The voice acting in both English and Japanese were very well done, I always watch the Japanese version. Unfortunately the only way to get my family to watch it, was to watch it in english - but to my amazement, I wasn't vomiting through the whole thing, I still prefer Subs 100,000,268/1, but they did put some effort into the english dialog.
The story was remarkable, taking place at a Bathhouse for the spirits. That concept is pretty cool right there, but they go much deeper. Old Japanese culture beliefs state how everything in nature contained a spirit - rocks, trees, grass, wind, everything. These spirits relax at the bathhouse where Chihiro accidently stumbled upon.
All I can say is, whether you're a major Otaku, or a first-timer - you need to see this movie at least once. It's an experience you'll never forget. In my opinion I haven't overrated it at all in this review, but it may just be an aquired taste. In conclusion, go rent it today and decide whether you should buy it, or if it's not your taste at all.
